The Perfect Impression

  1. No burn-through of wash material on preparation or adjacent teeth

  2. No tearing of the wash from the putty around the preparation

  3. Detailed and complete margins

  4. No tooth contact with tray; impression centered on tray

  5. Tray adhesive applied properly

  6. Properly mixed material; no streaking

  7. Strong bond between putty & wash materials; no signs of separation

  8. No voids; full, smooth wash material coverage


Inadequate Margins

Probable Causes:

  1. Inadequate retraction of sulcus around the preparation

  2. Moisture or bleeding around the preparation

  3. Too much time between mixing and seating

  4. Rocking of tray to get proper seating

  5. Tray movement after it has been seated


Voids

Probable Causes:

  1. Inadequate retraction of sulcus around the preparation

  2. Moisture or bleeding around the preparation

  3. Too much time between mixing and seating

  4. Improper syringing technique around preparation; keep tip immersed and use stirring motion


Debonding

Probable Causes:

  1. Contamination of vaseline or balm used on syringe or lips

  2. Glove contamination

  3. Outdated/expired impression materials


Contact with Tray

Probable Causes:

  1. Wrong size/shape tray used

  2. Tray not seated properly


Ledges

Probable Causes:

  1. Dimple in putty material is too small; must be deep and include teeth adjacent to all preparations

  2. Tray dislodges before material is fully set

  3. Not enough wash material

  4. Tray seated too quickly/forcefully


Inadequate Tray Adhesive

Probable Causes:

  1. No/not enough tray adhesive

  2. Incompatible/wrong manufacturer’s adhesive

  3. Inadequate drying time for adhesive

  4. Outdated/expired tray adhesive

  5. Disinfectant residue


Burn-Through of Wash Materials

Probable Causes:

  1. Dimple in putty material is too small; must be deep and include teeth adjacent to all preparations

  2. Not enough wash material

  3. Tray seated too quickly/forcefully


Tearing of Wash Material

Probable Causes:

  1. Premature removal of tray from the mouth; inattention to recommended times

  2. Inadequate retraction of sulcus around the preparation

  3. Moisture or bleeding around the preparation


Streaking

Probable Causes:

  1. Improper amounts of base and catalyst

  2. Inadequate mixing

  3. Glove contamination
